In accordance with the principles of Baroque garden design, gardens were an expression of a ruler's status and as such were closely related to the architecture of the palace, being an extension of its magnificent interiors. The central axis of the palace formed the backbone of the gardens whose symmetry was determined by orthogonal and diagonal axes. Behind the garden façade of the palace the Parterre occupied the largest space with its strictly symmetrical beds. The beds consisted of formal patterns made with strips of box and coloured stones or sand and were known as "broderie" parterres since these formal motifs were mostly taken from embroidery patterns. To either side of the parterre were boskets or formal plantings of severely clipped hedges forming passageways, small openings and hidden enclosures. Schonbrunn garden

Stefanka restaurant Bratislava

In 1897 Alexander Feigler Jr., an architect and constructor, built an Electricism-style semi-terraced tenement house at the corner of 59 Palisády Street (Pallisadenweg) and the Hodžovo Square (Kohlmarket). The left part was originally occupied by the Mezey Café. The house was owned by Rosa Fleischmanová, who later rented the first floor to Béla Hackenberger. The Hackenberger family were the managers of the Café from 1904.

In 1935 Mr. Vojtech Hackenberger, the last of the dynasty, reconstructed and modernized its interior. The Café had a telephone, the visitors could listen to the radio, smoke cigars, and in the rear part of the Café were two pool tables. In the 30s and 40s of the last century, Štefánka was one of the most prestigious cafés in Bratislava. It was a favorite meeting place of Bratislava intelligentsia, writers, poets, journalists, bohemians, artists, as well as debauchers. The atmosphere of Štefánka could still be enjoyed by the citizens of Bratislava in the beginning of the 70s, albeit only in a curtailed form. Today Štefánka Café not only returns to its former name, but also to its previous spirit. A reconstruction of the premises has brought about a restoration of the original interior's spirit with elements of art-nouveau, as well as implementation of top-level modern technologies. Schonbrunn Neptune fountain

Sited at the foot of the hill behind the palace and designed as the crowning element of the Great Parterre is the Neptune Fountain. It was conceived as part of the overall design of the gardens and park commissioned by Maria Theresa in the 1770s. Excavations for the pool began in 1776 and the fountain was completed four years later, just before the death of the empress. It was very probably designed by Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg, while the sculptural group of Sterzing marble was executed by Wilhelm Beyer. A retaining wall curving back into the slope of the hill, its balustrade crowned with vases, forms the back wall of the vast basin. At the centre the wall is interrupted by a projecting, semi-oval plinth from which rises a rocky landscape peopled with the sea-god Neptune and his entourage. Retaining wall and plinth are articulated by blind panels, those on the plinth being decorated with masks, while the vertical elements separating them are embellished with garlands. At the centre of the figural group above a rocky grotto stands Neptune in a shell-shaped chariot, his trident in his hand. Read more about Schonbrunn Neptune fountain

While children warm their hands on paper bags containing hot chestnuts, parents can sip their mulled wine and ponder on the way that the Christmas market has retained all of its childhood fascination.
The Magic of Advent with its many attractions and Christmas market stalls will be open this year daily, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. from 12 November through 23 December, and until 5 p.m. on 24 December (Christmas Eve).

Bratislava Christmas Market

The Christmas market in Bratislava is one of the most notable events of the year. Bratislava Christmas Market takes place in the atmospheric Main Square in the Old Town of Bratislava. Stalls are nestled together selling handcrafted ornaments and gifts for the holiday season. You can buy local Christmas specialties such as mulled wine, Christmas punch, lokse (potato crepes) with sweet and savoury fillings and a variety of Christmas decorations and gifts such as handmade crystal, copper forged pots and pans, wooden statues and figurines, corn husk dolls, beautiful pictures and photographs, and toys for children of all ages.
